Hampshire Archives Trust supported the establishment and development of Wessex Film and Sound Archive which it jointly administered with Hampshire County Council, to meet the identified need to preserve ‘new’ archive material developed in the 20th century through moving images and sound recordings. The archive now contains over 38,000 film and sound recordings relating to the Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. The collection is very diverse, ranging over professional, amateur, and documentary recordings from a variety of sources, each offering a unique insight into the region’s past. This fantastic resource includes content dating back to 1897 and is continually being added to. WFSA is based at Hampshire Record Office and in 2019 the Trust passed WFSA over entirely into the management of the Record Office.
