Dr Cheryl Butler talk is titled ‘Ascupart’s Children – Black History in the greater Southampton region 1500-1900’ drawn from archival material in Southampton and Hampshire’.

Background

In looking at ways to respond to the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower, Southampton wanted to reflect on responses to migration in the centuries following the events of 1620. It was particularly keen to explore what archives and materials survive which reflect the history of BAME communities.

The speaker:

Dr Cheryl Butler is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Honorary Fellow of the University of Winchester and is a member of the editorial board for the Southampton Records Series and the Hampshire Papers
