Getting it Right – The Value of Historic Research

ADAM Architecture is a leading practice specialising in Classical and Traditional architecture. The practice has been based in Winchester since its founding, but outgrew its premises and wanted to stay within the heart of the city.

In 2011, the company submitted planning and listed building applications for the conversion of a major historic building in Hyde Street, Hyde, SO23 7DW , owned by Winchester City Council, into their new head office. Given ADAM Architecture’s world-wide reputation in the conversion, renovation and extension of major historic buildings, it was vital that these listed structures were impeccably researched in order that their history could directly inform the design.

Extensive research was carried out by the practice’s in-house researcher, Dr Helen Lawrence-Beaton, within Hampshire Record Office and Winchester City Council archives (now held by Hampshire Record Office).

After consent was granted, a careful programme of restoration and extension was undertaken bringing a long term, sustainable use to these important historic buildings. The project is a great example of the value of detailed historic research in modern architectural practice and within the planning system.
