Grant to See Southampton for an Exhibition About the Mayflower

Southampton Exhibition about the Mayflower

2020 is the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower for America, this exhibition concentrates on the preparations to sail.

See Southampton is a collective of freelance historic tour guides and other local history enthusiasts collaborating under the name See Southampton. Their principal objective is to promote the culture, history and heritage of the city of Southampton and its neighbourhood to residents and to visitors.

In August 2020 they approached the Trust for a small grant to support their project  ‘Westgate Tower Exhibition – Provisioning the Mayflower’. The funding specifically allowed the purchase of a TV to show video footage and the production of a leaflet

The exhibition, which is free to visitors, tells of the important role that Southampton played in the story of the Mayflower and complement public talks and walks. See Southampton’s book on the provisioning of the Mayflower in Southampton will also add to the story. The exhibition tells the stories of incidents, events and the people involved during the 17 days the Mayflower was in Southampton in the summer of 1620. It also describes the background to the sailing and gives information about what Southampton was like in 1620.

The exhibition gives a wonderful opportunity to access the historic Westgate Tower which in 1620 stood right on the waterfront

You need to book to visit the exhibition info@seesouthampton.co.uk

The original plan was for the exhibition to close in October 2021, but do contact the same email address for more information closer to that time.
